No Tears for McCain

The DesMoinesRegister.com writes today that there are few tears being shed for McCain’s campaign finance troubles.

Noteworthy excerpts:

McCain, it will be recalled, champions campaign-finance reforms designed to wring big money out of politics, and he co-sponsored key legislation that bears his name along with that of Wisconsin Democrat Russell Feingold. McCain opted to accept federal funding for his presidential primary campaign, and he agreed to limit total fundraising in exchange for matching federal money for smaller donations.

That might have made sense when his campaign was on the ropes. Now, he wants to back out of that deal so he can legally collect more cash from the heavy hitters lining up with their checkbooks. Trouble is, McCain apparently used the federal financing as collateral for a $4 million loan to keep his campaign afloat. That, some argue, locks him into federal funding.

and this:

It gets worse for McCain, because there are four vacancies on the six-member Federal Election Commission, and without the possibility of a quorum, the commission can’t vote to release McCain.

and finally, this little piece of delicious sarcasm:

As for McCain, maybe he can hope that his big-spending supporters will buy their own ads to support his cause rather than give directly to his campaign. Oops. Forgot. That was banned in McCain’s legislation.
