McCain - Caught in His Own Web
Malkin writes over at Hotair.com that McCain’s FEC troubles are a result of his own doing.
We previously commented on this subject.
We said at the time:
Bottom-line:
Some of this is a little hard for us mere mortals to sort out. I imagine its kind of hard for lawyers to sort out. It is somewhat ironic that McCain might be caught up in this sort of situation. I say that because it is McCain that has helped create a monstrosity of legal regulations that can ensnare those who run for public office. His McCain-Feingold legislation did nothing to simplify the laws, and in fact only complicated matters.
I propose a much simpler system. With the ubiquitous availability of the internet - this system would work very well:
- Any individual can give any amount desired to any candidate from their own pocket. Any amount given would have to be reported within 24 hours on the FEC website. Name and address of donor would be necessary.
- Any organization or company can give any amount desired to any candidate from their own coffers. Any amount given would also have to be reported within 24 hours on the FEC website. Name and address of the donor organization, along with details on corporate relationships would be necessary.
- Dump public financing of elections. Stupid idea in the first place.
Full and complete disclosure. That’s the answer - not thousands of pages of legal regs.
It is sad that we have erected such huge legal hurdles (by means of red tape and beauracracy) to the average guy running for elected office. Of course, many will not have the intellectual or emotional maturity to run for office. But there are no doubt countless others who are otherwise qualified, but simply find the legal nightmare too oppressive.
So, its ironic that that campaign finance reform guy himself, finds himself in a bit of a pinch.
