As Predicted - McCain Won’t Move Right

As has been noted on this blog, and many others, and on talk radio - there’s no reason for McCain to move right. He dislikes conservatives. His core constituency is week-knee liberals and moderates. Despite his nice pep-talk at CPAC, conservatives know talk is cheap. Action is what counts.

So thus I’m not surprised by this headline: McCain Refuses to Pander

Now of course, I’m not advocating anybody compromise their principles and pander just to get votes. But McCain’s definition of “pander” can basically be summed up in this comment from his campaign:

He [Rick Davis] also disputed the sentiment from some conservatives that Mr. McCain needs to make a specific gesture to conservatives, such as selecting a vice-presidential nominee they can be excited about, to win their support. Instead, Mr. Davis said the important move is conservatives joining the McCain campaign, including defense, economic and social conservatives.

This comment wasn’t made by some junior campaign worker. This comment was made by Rick Davis, McCain’s Campaign Manager.  Notice what the philosophy is of the campaign: McCain won’t try to do things to win-over conservatives. Rather, they need to get onboard the McCain bus. This demonstrates the same attitude we’ve seen from McCain for years: I’m not going to change. Its up to you to get onboard.

McCain recently wrote to conservatives:

“I cannot succeed in this endeavor without the support of dedicated conservatives like you. And today, I write to ask for your support,” he wrote.

Its obvious McCain’s attitude is: (a) I need you. (b) Get on board. (c) I’m not going to reach out to you.

All of which is so ironic. McCain constantly touts himself as the guy that can “reach across the aisle.”

Apparently McCain can only reach left.

  1. I saw this coming. McCain can’t pander right, because he fears he will lose his credibility and moderate and liberal appeal. What he doesn’t seem to understand is that his liberal and moderate support is not likely to carry him thru the general election, as they will want a true liberal or at least a true democrat to vote for. It won’t work, and I can’t get excited and support him, as he isn’t sure to do anything better than the Democrats, except maybe appoint judges. But then I recall this “Gang of 14″ who got us only a few of the judges we really wanted. Who was prominent in the Gang of 14, Mr. McCain?
