Bauer Caves to McCain

Gary Bauer has caved in to McCain’s hype and has endorsed McCain for President and here at FoxNews. Not surprising I suppose given that Gary Bauer endorsed McCain back in 2000. You would think that between 2000 and 2008 Bauer would have had enough of McCain’s liberal, conservative-bashing ways - but apparently not.

Reminder - in the intervening time between Bauer’s first endorsement of McCain and his endorsement today of McCain - here’s what McCain’s been up to:

Restricted free speech for groups with special interests like the groups that Gary Bauer has been aligned with.

Teamed up with Ted Kennedy to disregard our nation’s laws on immigration and grant wholesale immunity and legalization to millions who have entered our country illegally and often stolen Americans’ identity in order to work illegally.

Proposed heavy new taxes on domestic energy production which guarantee our continued dependance on foreign oil.

Collaborated with liberal elements of the Senate to block the nomination of many conservative judges - the same judges that folks like Gary Bauer hope will interpret the constitution accurately - and not use it as a means to advance a liberal cause.

So, I’m puzzled Mr. Bauer - you’re conservative and very pro-life. That’s great. But why support a man that actively blocked the appointment of such judges to our nation’s courts? Why support a man who has stifled free speech in the important days just before an election - the kind of free speech you yourself have taken advantage of and utilized to warn your fellow citizens about a particular candidate or to urge them to vote for a given candidate?

Bauer says,

“I’m well aware of the times when John McCain has disappointed conservatives,” acknowledges Bauer, “but I do think there’s some unfairness right now in the conversation about his candidacy. The speech [at CPAC] was pro-life, it was pro-lower taxes, it was strong national defense — and those are all things that John McCain has been for many, many years.”

Isn’t it far more accurate Mr. Bauer to say that McCain has repeatedly disappointed conservatives. And please tell us, just exactly what is unfair in the conversation right now about his candidacy? Is it unfair to point out his record? Why is it fair for you to point out his speech and hold it up as an example of why we should line up behind him, and yet it is unfair for us to point out his record of actual achievement?

McCain-Feingold.

McCain-Kennedy.

McCain-Lieberman.

Gang of 14.

Votes to deny Bush’s tax cuts.

Those are facts Mr. Bauer. Speeches are just words… and talk is cheap.
